This extremely rare cloth originated in Lampung, Sumatra. Sometimes called Ship of the Dead, the exact iconography of these cloth has been lost, however it is known that they were symbols of wealth and power.
This example, 2.6 meter long has a single ship. Gold threads were aplique to the cloth, remenants of which can be seen.The yellow threads were dyed with tumeric. The blue is silk thread. It is in amazing condition for a cloh so old with
Believed to have been woven in the time before the explosion of Gunung Kracatoa, it was purchased by a French woman artist, a friend of President Sukarno in the early 60s. We have had this in our collection since 1983. Some authorities say that there are only about 150 such cloth still extant, most in public collections.
