This low relief panel, carved on teak, depicts Nyi Loro Kidul.
Nyi Loro Kidul is the princess of the Southern ocean. Her legend is that she is asleep until awakened by a man she likes who enters her domain. If she wishes to have him she will take him into her palace in the depths where she is attended by a retinue of mermaids. There she takes her pleasure with him.and they make love. If the man is special she may gift him to her favorites and he lives for eternity in their embrace
